Roots of Yoga
A workshop with Sarah Capua
Friday, October 23 · 5:00pm · via Zoom
Behind the postures, yoga is a philosophy. This workshop traces the tradition back to its roots in Indian thought — situating asana practice within the broader landscape of the Sad Darśana, the six classical schools of philosophy from which yoga's worldview emerges.
We'll explore yoga's distinctly Indian model of the human being —
the pañcamaya-s (five dimensions),
the vāyu-s (the subtle winds that govern the body), and the layered subtle anatomy that underlies practice — and see how different texts point toward different doors into the practice.
The Yoga Sūtra-s,
the Bhagavad Gītā,
and the Haṭha Yoga Pradīpikā each emphasize a different arm of the path, reflecting the many ways yoga has been practiced and transmitted across time.
We'll also look at the guru paramparā, the lineage through which this knowledge has been passed down, and walk through the eight limbs as a practical roadmap — before turning to the question at the heart of it all: what does this ancient framework look like when it's lived out in a modern practice, in a modern body, today?
Join Sarah for an evening of study, context, and conversation — no prior philosophical background required, just curiosity about the tradition you're already practicing.
