The Architecture of Our Effort: Why We Practice Together
We are here because of our collective efforts. This Shala doesn't exist by chance; it exists because of a shared choice to show up, breathe, and do the work.
When we talk about the space we hold, we often use the word Ashram (आश्रम). At its root is śrami—the act of exerting effort. With the prefix ā, it becomes a "choosing where to put that effort." It is a place where we strive toward a goal in a disciplined manner, whether that goal is spiritual, yogic, or simply the quiet asceticism of daily practice.
But we don't strive alone. We lean on the Sangha.
The Sangha is essential for preserving the Dharma. It provides a "safe direction," helping us reduce suffering through shared meditation. When we gather, it becomes Satsanga—Sat (truth) and sanga (in group). We are quite literally in the company of truth.
Without this community, the path is lonely. I often think of the Sadhaka (the practitioner) like a pinball in a machine, constantly bouncing off the walls of karma. The Shala and the Sangha are the refuge that keeps us centered when the world feels chaotic.
Nothing worthwhile is built overnight. To build something that lasts, we need the three Shaktis:
Jnana Shakti: The skill and knowledge.
Kriya Shakti: The time and tremendous effort.
Maya Shakti: The profound vision and creative capacity.
Even the Taj Mahal began as a vision that required all three. Our practice is no different. It takes knowledge of the method, the grit of daily effort, and the creative wisdom to see the divinity within ourselves.
In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna reminds us that associating with those on the path is the fastest way to break free from material bondage. By surrounding ourselves with those who have unwavering faith, our own fickle minds become stable. This wise companionship turns a chaotic mind into a steady one, shifting us from a narrow, ego-centric perspective to a universal one.
Thank you for being part of this effort. See you on the mat.
